Domaine Tortochot, Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Jeunes Rois, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France, 2022

Producer Profile
Domaine Tortochot is one of the more famous estates run by 4th generation Chantal Tortochot, taking over from her father in the late 1990s.
Blessed with 12 hectares of vines are spread over 34 separate parcels, including some of the most enviable sites in Burgundy, featuring plots in the Grands Crus of Chambertin (most northern section of the vineyard), Mazis-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin, as well some beautifully positioned 1er Crus including the rows of vines in 1er Cru ‘Lavaux Saint-Jacques’ bordering the famous ‘Clos Saint-Jacques’. Moving towards organic viticulture since 2003 she converted the entire vineyards to organic agriculture in 2008. Chantal makes traditional style Gevrey, lots of chiselled fruit, structured tannins with bright acidity - there’s style in these wines. Grapes are 100% destemmed, fermentation Temperatures are supervised before wines make transfer to medium toast barrel cellaring; 100% new oak for Grands Crus, 50% for 1er Crus and 25% for village wines, with Malolactic taking place during the course of the 15 - 18 month ageing period. Gevrey Chambertin “Les Corvées” is her experimental vineyard, where Chantal tries net cultivation techniques and non-chemical substances - she believes that the soil should be as natural as possible. The 1er Crus are fine examples of the terroir. The Lavaux Saint Jacques is a deep garnet colour with fine cherry and earthy aromas. The Champeaux is of a more fruity/floral style with notes of cherry and rose. This is a very elegant pinot with an impressively long finish. The Charmes has spicy, fruity, smoky aromas with deep red fruit on the palate. The estate boasts 4 Grand Crus, three are in Gevrey – Charmes, Chambertin and the flagship Grand Cru, the excellent Mazis Chambertin with its rich fruit and liquorice flavours, strong with elegant tannins and great potential. The estate also has a modest 7 rows of vines in the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru vineyard producing dark berry aromas and underbrush nuances.
