August Kesseler, Germany
At the time a 2.5-hectare large barrel wine business in the Rheingau and he worked hard to achieve an enviable international reputation, which has continued to today. Located in the Pinot Noir heartland of Assmannshäusen, in one of the most prestigious wine growing areas for Riesling - the Rheingau, August Kesseler have some of the best Pinot Noir and Riesling sites that the lower and middle Rheingau have to offer spread over 32.5 hectares.
Viticulture
Vineyards, situated mostly on the steepest of slopes are exclusively VDP classified Erste Lagen (Premier Crus) and Grosse Lagen (Grands Crus) which are spread all over the Rheingau. he elegant Pinot Noirs are grown on the world-famous Assmannshäuser Höllenberg where they thrive in the barren, slate soil. The very specific terroirs of the steep slopes in Rüdesheim and Lorch as well as the clay sites in Hattenheim, Erbach and Kiedrich give the Rieslings the distinctive character of their origin. Working the slopes is particularly laborious but the extraordinary quality of the wines compensates for the hard work and justifies every single bead of sweat.
Winemaking
The winery is certified as sustainable with Eco Step Wein and is a member of the VDP and the German Barrique Forum, and with August Kesseler himself, Max Himstedt and the successful and ambitious oenologist Simon Batarseh all working together they have pushed forward into creating a world class winery with the belief that “the wine is only as good as the passion and expertise of the team behind it” and are determined to highlight the unique characteristics of each site and the grape variety in the bottle.
