A Year of Positive Impact and Sustainability in 2024

At Alliance Wine, sustainability is not just a goal but a journey. Our commitment to making a positive impact is integral to our business strategy, from sourcing and producing wine to engaging with suppliers, customers, and employees. We've aligned with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on areas where we can make the most significant impact, and built our strategy around four key pillars: Nature, People, Growth, and Partnership.

Our latest Positive Impact Report showcases the progress we made in 2024 and the initiatives we've undertaken to drive positive change in our industry and create a better world of wine.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE:

  • 24.5% reduction in electricity consumption in FY23/24.
  • 56% reduction in natural gas usage in FY23/24.
  • 28.2 tCO2e and 20.5 tCO2e carbon savings from energy saving measures
  • 37.5% decrease in commercial waste
  • 48% decrease in residual waste

NATURE

Reducing our carbon footprint has been a major focus; in 2023, we achieved ISO 14064-1 certification, ensuring accurate measurement and reporting of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Last year, we went a step further, we partnered with AgriTech company Deep Planet on a groundbreaking project to introduce carbon insetting to our business practices, moving beyond traditional carbon offsetting.

Additionally, 100% of the purchased energy at our facilities in Beith now comes from renewable sources, and through various practical measures, we significantly reduced our natural gas and electricity consumption in FY23/24.

PEOPLE

We've embedded a Positive Impact culture across our business, prioritising responsible drinking, employee well-being, and professional development. We launched a Responsible Drinking Policy and Culture aligned with Wine in Moderation principles. Initiatives to support employee well-being include mental health training, mental health first aiders in our offices, a Cycle to Work scheme, and gardening activities at our Scottish facilities. The garden has proven particularly popular, delivering crops of strawberries, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, and leeks.

GROWTH

Innovation is key to our growth strategy. We've focussed on creating environmentally sound products and policies and engaging suppliers to meet social and environmental standards while improving our offerings to customers.

Notable initiatives and achievements in 2024:

  • Implementing our Circularity Policy at our London Portfolio Tasting 2024. We reduced waste significantly despite hosting 69 more attendees:
    • 49.3% reduction in general waste
    • 49.6% reduction in dry mixed recycling waste
    • 36.1% reduction in glass waste
  • Ensuring 44% of our wine portfolio featured bottles weighing 420g or less
  • Prioritising FSC-certified cartons and pallets and increasing the use of natural cork and screwcaps with 60% recycled content

PARTNERSHIP

We understand the importance of collaboration in achieving our sustainability objectives. We've forged alliances with organisations like Wine in Moderation, Porto Protocol, The Drinks Trust, Harpers Sustainability Charter, and Deep Planet to amplify our impact and sector-wide transformation.

“Rather than simply seeking to reduce the negative impact of global challenges we face through sustainability initiatives, we will commit to having a positive impact on our environment through the way we deliver our products and services. In practical terms this means ‘doing good’ rather than ‘being less bad’”. Marta Juega Rivera PhD, Head of Positive Impact

LOOKING AHEAD

These achievements are just the beginning. Sustainability is a continuous journey, and we will continue to push boundaries, embrace innovation, and work with our partners to make a lasting positive impact. We are dedicated to:

  1. Further reducing our carbon footprint and improving energy efficiency.
  2. Expanding our partnerships with innovative companies to drive industry-wide change.
  3. Enhancing our waste management practices and moving towards a circular economy.
  4. Aligning our business practices with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to efficiently maximise our impact.
